My wife has given a list of prompts for me to sketch up. The word Touchdown came up a few weeks back before Super bowl LVII was played between the #Cheifs and #Eagles. I’ve been a fan of the sport for most my life, and at an early age I collected all sorts of sporting cards with football being one of them. This is where I wanted to take the prompt, and with the Super bowl around the corner I thought this would be a great way to start getting excited for the game. I wanted to create my own football card. Here is the process on how it all came together. Let me know what you think in the comments.
First, I took to the sketchbook and drew out the idea while watching Derick Henry of the Tennessee titans. He was the inspiration for the rhino.
As I came up with the idea, I really enjoyed putting in a pack of gators trying to tackle the Rhino as the opposition. So it was extra fun to copy and add on through the digital format all the details and lines.
The lines are always have such a clean feel to them in Adobe Photoshop. This is what it looks like with no color. (The blue is a mistake, but as a reference its fun to look at.)
No football game is complete with out a referee. What better way to show a ref in the animal kindgdom then a Zebra?
Every good football team has fans, and what’s more fun than drawing 3 fans upset with their team losing. Drink up boys, its going to be a long day with that rhino running back.
Finally it all came together with the shading and color.
There was a lot of experimenting with this one for me as I transferred a sketch to a digital format. However I loved how it turned out, and over on my Instagram (Camthesquid) you can see the different variations of the card, including the border. Which I feel really put the feel of the football card on the photo. Go check it out and follow for more fun art updates.
