Last year I was experimenting with adobe photoshop, as its a much cleaner way of producing artwork and possibly more efficient. I’ve been a paper and ink person, an oil painter who switched to acrylics, and now I’m doing what I can to switch over to photoshop. The reason for the switch is due to the never ending push to get content out. I’m trying to find a quick way to release work without losing the detail and feel of my pieces. Although I’ll never fully give up canvas art, the ability to paint/draw on a computer has added some much need quickness to my work and the ability to put more work out there.
This piece, I set out to practice drawing the “translucent.” My biggest push as an artist right now is showing light and how it forms or doesn’t form on objects. Transparency in artwork is a difficult task to achieve, but when done properly it can really make the piece of art. This is what I was trying to accomplish with my “Dead Die Twice” picture that was shared last year on Instagram.
The ghost idea was also new to me, but I have always felt that there is no growth if you do not challenge yourself by doing new things. This picture (above) is an alternate version of the finished product but its a good way of showing the ghost. The most difficult part in the picture was the “green” soul coming out of the dead samurai’s mouth. That’s why you see the mist like soul moving over the weapons, arrows, and some of the armor from the dead man. That’s where the translucence comes in to play. For my first real stab at it, I’m happy with the way it turned out.
Here is the finished product:
One area of improvement, is that I could have made the actual “Spirit” of the samurai transparent as well. And also add some additional shading to the rope underneath the chin of the ghostly warrior. (there is always next time) This was a super fun project that I did and am really happy with the way it turned out. Thank you for reading and supporting my artwork.
