Sniper with Mech-Wolf

So let’s continue talking about the elephant in the room here: AI. I recently shared my thoughts and opinions on another blog post about what we need to do as artists to grow with AI. So many of us, especially artists, are worried about AI putting us out of work. I tend to think that this is an overreaction, and we all need to take a deep breath and relax.

What artists are missing is how to use AI to improve their own art. For me, I have been trying to branch out of my comfort zone and try new things. One of those things is character art, and for the past few months I’ve been studying the face, hands, and body in general to help develop this. Now, I’m not perfect here, but I want to share a process with you that can help you get better. It is also really easy to follow along with and helps you create some cool art.

Using AI to help develop your own personal art starts with Bing‘s Image Creator. It has a great “Starter” AI program for images that you can use. And Guess what? It’s free, and you can use it to your heart’s delight as long as you’re not looking up no-no images. Here are the three images I took from Bing’s image creator to help me develop this new piece. (Thank you, Bing.)

Now here is the deal—the rules that need to be put in place to pull this off. To say, Hey, look what I created that isn’t AI artwork.

Number 1: Never claim any AI artwork as your own. The above pictures are not mine, and I did not create them. All I did was put in a prompt on what I wanted examples of, and then I sifted through garbage images to find the best ones. Not all AI images are created equal. (The three images above is what I chose.)

Number 2: Specifically choose a medium that has no AI influence or computer program, which means no Photoshop or Procreate either. This should be you, some markers, acrylic paint or ink, and a piece of paper. (Or whatever medium you like.) I’m sure there are many artists out there who want to use Photoshop or Procreate with the same method, and that is totally up to you. For me, I am distancing myself from these programs, at least for now, with this process.

Number 3: Always have a blast creating your art. If not, then what’s the point of doing it?

Here is the video I made of me creating my Sniper Wolf-Mech characters:
