As I look at the business’ side of my art page, I have struggled recently with trying to find unique ways to engage my audience with my own personal work through my own barriers and limitations. What I mean by “personal work” is my own creation, and with my own images and art, I’m at a certain point where I’m trying new things. Popular things.
It dawned on me a month or so ago as I was sitting with my nephew and he was showing me his massive Pokemon card collection. I asked him what his favorite Pokemon was, and he said it was Pikachu. So, I decided to try my hand at drawing the most beloved Pokemon, or rather, the most famous. The trick here was to try to show him radiating lightning as if he were fighting another Pokemon. I thought it would be cool to show a “Finishing move” from the little guy. At certain points, you’ll see he looks a bit evil, but when you are blasting another poor Pokemon with electrical currents, it might just be evil. So here is my “Palpatine Pikachu.”
As for the process, this was also different from what I typically do, as I usually sketch out a basic drawing first. Then I transfer that sketch either digitally or by using it as a reference. With this particular piece, I just dove right in. Thats why there are some visible mistakes left on the canvas. Also, I didn’t use acrylic paint with this one, as I was trying to branch out and use some Chinese version of Copic markers that I got from my in-laws last Christmas. I then used some acrylic ink to add the flare and show the crackling of the lightning coming off Pikachu.
Here is what came from it:
