Photoshop Edit 2 – Shel Silverstein Session

One of my recent hobbies has been taking pictures of signs in different places. This one (below) is on the west side of Utah Lake. As a boy, I enjoyed reading Shel Silverstein’s, “Where the Sidewalk Ends.” A book of creative art and humorous poetry that captivated me for hours. After stumbling upon this road sign, I immediately had to jump out of the car and snap a photo as it instantly brought back childhood nostalgia of the great author.

With the intent to create something in the spirit of Shel Silverstein, I took to Photoshop. I gathered up a few photos I had recently taken in Paris, France. Both photos were of miniature replicas of the Sacré-Cœur, and of Les Invalides. I wanted to display the road sign as “Larger than life,” so I took the two replica photos and shrunk them down and placed them on each side of the sign.

The next step was to try and display a place that was out of this world. I wanted to reflect the water with a distinct vibrant color and thought the pink allowed the photo to standout. It also allowed the sign some definition, so that way when looking at the photo you see the words End of Sidewalk.

Shel, had a way with making the odd feel normal in his poetry. Although his artwork I feel was never “normal,” he certainly had his own unique take on his sketches. I, like him, felt like I had to put my own style to this set of photos. This is why I set the buildings in the florescent pink against the light blue mountain backdrop. I used the smart filter in Photoshop on both buildings, the sky, and the water to add the flare to both edits. I’ve always tried to show a “different” reality in most of my art work, this is how it turned out:
