Dreaming Spires – Scotland

We are back! Squidink-art.com and Cam the Squid took some personal time off. We have had an amazing break full of travel, getting married, some pandemic scare, and now stuck in our apartment for social distancing because of COVID-19. I suppose that means its time to get back on track and post something.

Over the past few years we’ve collected several different photos of different places throughout the world. I wanted to share a favorite of mine with you today. Below is a picture of a sculpture created by a Scottish artist, named Helen Denerley. This sculpture is called Dreaming Spires and depicts two Giraffes mosing around the Omni center in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Giraffes, a younger calf and full adult, are made from old car parts and some scraps of metal. This beautiful statue was completed and displayed in 2005.

Edinburgh, Scotland – Dreaming Spires Sculpture

Below the feet of the two long necked creatures, are the words of a famous Poet, Roy Campbell. The poem circulates the hoofs of the sculpture and states: “Giraffes! a People Who live between earth and skies Each in his own religious steeple Keeping a lighthouse with his eyes.”

What I love most about this sculpture is the imagination behind it. Scotland, although the people are warm and full of character, in December it is cold. Walking the streets of Edinburgh full of old Castles and Churches, the two Giraffes stuck out amongst the crowds.

Obviously, they were unaccustomed to the rolling green vegetation Scotland offers, and undoubtedly foreign to the cultural idioms. The two long necks are most certainly contemplating the different paths to take, and one looking up to the Elder, forever puzzled. The Giraffes, much like my brother and I, were two travelers seeking an adventure. They are off to see the wonders of the world. They are full of excitement, and desperately looking for adventure, always on the look out for mischief. I personally connected to these two Giraffes as Landon, my brother, and I were off doing the same in 2018.
